Mladá dívka Katherine Eleanor Merrick (Elizabeth Taylor) najde v divočině zatoulané štěně kolie a dá mu jméno Bill. Když Bill dospěje, začne hlídat stádo ovcí, ale jednoho dne ho srazí auto. Aby nezcepeněl, odveze ho řidič do útulku na léčení. Když si ho nikdo pár měsíců nevyzvedne (protože ani netuší, kde je), vyberou ho jako bojového psa do 2. světové války. Tam se ale změní a po návratu začne stádům, která kdysi hlídal, škodit. Naštěstí je to opět ve stejném kraji, jako žije Katherine... (monolog)
