James Bond se tajně vydává do Japonska, protože Zemi hrozí 3. světová válka. Z oběžné dráhy kolem planety totiž zmizela americká družice i s posádkou a stejný osud potká i kosmonauty ze Sovětského svazu. Ohrožuje to křehké vztahy mezi supervelmocemi. Agentu 007 nezbývá, než rozkrýt tajemství obří sopky. Málokterá země však skrývá pro cizího agenta tolik nejrůznějších nebezpečí jako Japonsko.
